Traverse City VFW Recognized for Community Service

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2780 in Traverse City was recently recognized for their contributions to the community. At the State of Michigan Convention in June, the Post was recognized with six community service awards, including the prestigious All State Award. The All State award is conferred to Posts that show a true commitment to continuing their service in their local, state, and national communities, an award that less than 10% of VFW Posts in Michigan received this year. The Post has received this award numerous times in the past and this is their second year in a row receiving the award under the current Post leadership. When asked for his response to the State awards, Post Commander Eric Boals was quick to give credit for the awards to Post membership involvement, and the strong relationship the Post has with its Auxiliary leadership and membership.

The Cherryland Post was recently featured in the VFW National magazine in an article entitled “This Place Is Better Than Ever”. An article highlighting the Post’s involvement and support of the greater Traverse City community. The article highlighted their involvement in youth programs and activities, from chartering a local Scout troop, to their active participation in the VFW’s youth scholarship programs; Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen. The post also maintains a direct link to the senior community, hosting the Grand Traverse Area Senior Center Network in their hall while their new building is under construction. The Cherryland VFW takes its role as a Veterans Service Organization to heart, maintaining its focus on taking care of the area’s Veterans, their family members, and those still serving. Post 2780 and its Auxiliary welcomes new members, young and old, to join their ranks, using their mission statement of “Veterans, Service, Camaraderie, and Your Legacy” to welcome them.

The Post was also recognized at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention held in Louisville, Kentucky in August. The Post was awarded a National Community Service Award by the National Organization, recognizing the Post as one of the top 50 Posts for Community Service in the Organization, and also awarded All American status for the second year in a row recognizing their overall commitment to the community and support of VFW National Programs. Post Quartermaster Derek Braun, who was the representative at the National Convention, echoed the Commander’s sentiments, crediting both the existing membership and the influx of new members to both the Post and the Auxiliary for the success of the Post in its community.
